Jaswinder Singh, Associate Professor, McGill University, Canada

Prof. Jaswinder Singh is currently serving in the faculty of the Department of Plant Science, McGill University, Canada. After completing his PhD from CSIRO Plant Industry, Canberra Australia, he did his postdoctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on the enhancement of quality traits, and stress tolerance in crop plants using functional genomics and biotechnological approaches. His laboratory is actively researching germination/ dormancy from a unique perspective. His group has recently discovered a novel barley gene, which regulates the β-glucan activity during germination. His findings have shown for the first time the reversal of epigenetic silencing in plants. He has published over 50 research articles and delivered over 60 invited talks in international meetings and renowned academic institutes. He is the Director of the recently funded multi-institutional NSERC-CREATE program on the “Genome Editing for Food Security and Environmental Sustainability”. He has been in many National (AAFC, NSERC) and International (US-DOE) grant review panels. He co-chaired two conferences in 2014 (9th Canadian Plant Biotechnology Conference) and 2016 (joint conference of CSA-CSHS). He served in various executive positions in different plant science societies, notably as the President of the Canadian Society of Agronomy (2018-19), Eastern Director of the Canadian Society of Agronomy (2010-12), Membership Officer of the Canadian Association of Plant Biotechnology (2013-14) and member of International Affairs Committee of the American Society of Plant Biologists (2012-15). He is currently serving as Past President of the Canadian Society of Agronomy and sit in the Plant Canada Board. He chaired of the Gleb Krotkov award committee of the Canadian Society of Plant Biologists in 2018-19 and recently appointed to serve in the Corresponding member award committee of the American Society of Plant Biologists (2019-23). The Canadian Society of Plant Biologists recognized him with prestigious C. D. Nelson award in 2018 for his outstanding contribution to plant science.
