    Overview

Since the discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 based genome editing technology in 2012, the world is witnessing an unprecedented revolution in its use for various applications for genetic improvement and modification of various organisms. The technology enables the manipulation of targeted genes in a precise and efficient manner in many organisms and cell lines, and has become indispensable for all life science researchers globally, ranging from agriculture to pharma to health sectors.

In this 7-day online workshop, we will cover the basics of genome editing as investigated by researchers in different organisms including model plant species, Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans, yeast, mammalian and stem cells, and elaborate its application for sustainable agriculture, better nutrition, health benefits and environmental sustainability.

Future developments and directions of the emerging genome editing tools and technologies will also be discussed.

    Prof Yiping Qi's Biography

    Prof Yiping Qi

    Associate Professor

    University of Maryland

The Qi Lab is working in the forefront of plant genome engineering and synthetic biology. They develop plant genome editing and transcriptional regulation tools based on different platforms such as TALE, CRISPR-Cas9, Cas12a and Cas12b. They disseminate such tools worldwide through Addgene. These tools not only allow for editing plant genomes, but also enable genome reprogramming at the transcriptome level. They apply these cutting-edge tools in both basic and translational research in plants to ensure food security and safety. First, they use these new genetic tools to answer some basic questions in plant immunity and resilience under stressful environments. Second, they apply multiplex genome editing tools to accelerate crop breeding and de novo crop domestication to make high yield, more nutritious and disease resistant crops. Third, they employ CRISPR activation (CRISPRa) and CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) for engineering metabolic pathways, rewiring plant immune responses and developing synthetic switches in plants toward engineering better crops. These goals can not be achieved without collaboration. They are collaborating with other researchers to apply and use these tools in many plant species including rice, maize, wheat, barley, banana, Arabidopsis, Camelina, soybean, cucumber, tomato, potato, carrot, strawberry, poplar, citrus, apple and pear.  Their recent publications can be checked out at Google Scholar.

    Basudev Ghoshal

    Basudev Ghoshal's Biography

    Basudev Ghoshal

    Research Scientist

    Agriculture and Agri-Food

Dr. Basudev Ghoshal is a Research Scientist at the Summerland Research and Development Centre of the Government of Canada. He has extensive research experience in the field of plant-virus interaction, plant epigenetics and epigenome editing. Dr. Ghoshal acquired his Master’s degree in Botany and gained initial research experience in Plant Biotechnology from the University of Calcutta. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, studying plant-virus interaction in the laboratory of Dr. Hélène Sanfaçon. After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Ghoshal continued his research on plant-virus interaction as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia for a short period in Dr. D’Ann Rochon’s laboratory. He then joined Prof. Steven E. Jacobsen’s laboratory at the University of California, Los Angeles in the USA, to pursue another postdoctoral research at the interface of gene regulation, epigenetics, and pathogen interactions. There, he developed expertise in CRISPR-Cas9 technology, transcriptomics, bioinformatics, and next-generation sequencing. As a postdoctoral fellow in the Jacobsen laboratory, Dr. Ghoshal was involved in developing tools for epigenome editing. He has also advanced the use of plant RNA viruses to deliver guide RNAs for epigenome editing. He has published several scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Ghoshal’s long-standing research interest is to generate foundational knowledge and use this knowledge for translational research in the field of plant virology.
