Forensic DNA Analysis-New Technologies and Practices
Overview
DNA has long been the gold standard in human forensic analysis because of the standardization of DNA markers, databases and statistical analyses. Forensic DNA Analysis plays a crucial role in the investigation and resolution of many crimes worldwide. The demand for tools and technologies in all areas of forensic science, especially DNA testing, far exceeds the current capabilities of the field. DNA analysis methods have changed countless times over the years as technology changes and allows for more information to be determined with less starting material.
This online Forensics Expert Forum-cum-Webinar is a technical discussion group comprising of Senior Team Leaders and/or R&D Heads and has been designed to include engaging and informative discussions on DNA Forensics and will feature presentation-based discussions that delve into the latest technological advancements and successes in human identification through forensic DNA analysis. This webinar will address advancements and current practices in the various aspects of the DNA analysis process, from optimizing extraction and identifying biological sources to next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics to DNA analysis case studies and success stories in crime investigation.
The purpose of this Forensic Sciences Expert Forum-cum-Webinar is to bring the experts and the stakeholders to an international platform that encourages knowledge and experience sharing through open discussion sessions. This discussion webinar will be held on May 10, 2024, virtually. This is brought to you by the organizing team of the Forensics Research and Analysis conference held in Radisson Blu Paschim Vihar Hotel in New Delhi on 25-25 April 2019.

Dr. Hirak Ranjan Dash is an Assistant Professor of Forensic Biotechnology at the National Forensic Sciences University, Delhi Campus, India. Before joining academics, he worked as a Forensic DNA expert at Forensic Science Laboratory, Madhya Pradesh, India. He has examined more than 1000 cases using the DNA Profiling technique. His research interests include DNA Profiling, Microbial Forensics, and Next Generation Sequencing.
He has published 55 research articles in various peer-reviewed journals. He has written 12 books in various fields of Biotechnology. He is a life member of the International Society for Forensic Genetics, the Association of Microbiologists of India, and the Asian Federation of Biotechnology. He is the pioneer researcher from India on NGS-based Forensic DNA analysis. He is featured in the list of the top 2% scientists of in the world for 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Mr. Erik Hall is currently the Director of the Forensic Science Program at Saint Louis University in St Louis, Missouri. Professor Hall teaches classes such as Crime Scene Investigation and Forensic Biology. Prior to SLU, Mr. Hall was the Biology Technical Leader and a DNA analyst at the St Louis Metropolitan Police Department Crime Laboratory for over a decade. Mr. Hall is also the founder and principal consultant at Hall Forensic Consulting, which specializes in reviewing DNA evidence aiding lawyers and detectives in active and cold case investigations.
At the crime laboratory, Mr. Hall was also the head of the DNA crime scene response team which was tasked with aiding detectives in investigating major crime scenes using bloodstain pattern analysis and advanced DNA techniques to gain insight into the crimes. Mr. Hall has a masters degree in forensic science from the University of New Haven and a bachelors degree in Biochemistry from Messiah University.

Dr. John M. Butler is an internationally recognized expert in forensic DNA analysis and holds a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Virginia. He has written five textbooks on Forensic DNA Typing (2001, 2005, 2010, 2012, and 2015) and given hundreds of invited talks to scientists, lawyers, and members of the public throughout the United States and in 29 other countries so far. In 2022, he co-authored a new book, Understanding Forensic DNA with Cambridge University Press, to improve public understanding of the field.
Dr. Butler’s research, first conducted at the FBI Laboratory and now at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), pioneered the methods used today worldwide for DNA testing in criminal casework, paternity investigations, and many DNA ancestry assessments. He has been honored in multiple White House ceremonies (2002 and 2015) for his work in advancing DNA testing.

Dr. Dhirendra Singh Yadav is a highly accomplished professional with a diverse background in biotechnology, genetics, genomics, and forensic sciences. His academic journey led him to obtain a Ph.D. in Genetics & Genomics from the National Institute of Pathology, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi, with his research focusing on Human Population Genetics/Cancer Genomics. His doctoral research titled\\\\\\\"Gene Expression Profiling and Genetic Variations of Oral Cancer\\\\\\\" utilized advanced molecular biology techniques such as DNA Microarray and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), along with conventional methods like DNA & RNA Extraction, PCR-RFLP, Real Time-PCR, and DNA Sequencing.
With over 11.5 years of experience as a Forensic Scientist specializing in DNA Profiling/Forensic Biology, Dr. Yadav has served at various Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs) under the Department of Forensic Science Services (DFSS), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India. He has examined and reported cases of Forensic Biology, Serology, and DNA Profiling in accordance with NABL Guidelines at CFSLs located in Kolkata, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Bhopal, and Pune. Additionally, he has actively participated in crime scene investigations, provided expert testimony in court proceedings, and delivered lectures to officers of investigating agencies and universities.
Dr. Yadav\\\\\\\'s contributions extend beyond his professional roles; he serves as a scientific reviewer and editorial board member for international and national journals, including Human Genetics from the Springer Nature Group. Prior to M-Vac Systems he worked in sales and sales management for both small and international corporations such as Pfizer. He also served 14 years with the US Army and Army Reserves, achieving the rank of Captain. Since leading M-Vac Systems into the forensic market Mr. Bradley has had the opportunity to teach people all over the world about the M-Vac and wet-vacuum DNA collection including UK, France, Canada, South Africa, UAE, Oman, China, Australia, Thailand, Vietnam and all over the United States. Sejal Gupta holds a Masters in Forensic Science from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland and has recently graduated with a LLB from the Government Law College, Mumbai. She also has diplomas in Entrepreneurship Management, Distance Learning from Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research, and in Computer Forensics held in collaboration with Asian Cyber Law and St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. Additionally, she has participated in various workshops, conferences and seminars pertaining to Forensic Sciences, and she has represented India in the “Second Youth Congress on Drug Abuse Prevention” in Maldives, 2003, where drug awareness issues were discussed with members from other SAARC nations. She is currently a lecturer for the Diploma Course in Forensic Science & Criminal Law & Online Certificate Course in Forensic Science at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, and a member of the Board of Studies (BOS) for all the Forensic Science courses in St. Xavier’s College. At FACTS, she is a forensic consultant, and has designed and conducted several training workshops pertaining to forensic science. Sejal Gupta holds a Masters in Forensic Science from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland and has recently graduated with a LLB from the Government Law College, Mumbai. She also has diplomas in Entrepreneurship Management, Distance Learning from Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research, and in Computer Forensics held in collaboration with Asian Cyber Law and St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. Additionally, she has participated in various workshops, conferences and seminars pertaining to Forensic Sciences, and she has represented India in the “Second Youth Congress on Drug Abuse Prevention” in Maldives, 2003, where drug awareness issues were discussed with members from other SAARC nations. She is currently a lecturer for the Diploma Course in Forensic Science & Criminal Law & Online Certificate Course in Forensic Science at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, and a member of the Board of Studies (BOS) for all the Forensic Science courses in St. Xavier’s College. At FACTS, she is a forensic consultant, and has designed and conducted several training workshops pertaining to forensic science. Additionally, she has conducted guest lectures and Certificate Programs and various colleges in Mumbai. She has also interned with the Mumbai Police where she learnt the working of the police and the relationship with the forensic science lab in Mumbai, analyzed burglary crime scenes for academic purposes, and prepared a portable Forensic Kit and presented it to the Mumbai Police.
